Abstract: Flaking is a common failure mode of brittle materials like ice. The paper analyses flaking with a twodimensional boundary element method by modelling the growth of a single surface crack. It is assumed that linear elastic fracture mechanics applies, and that a crack grows to the direction that minimises /Knl. Different geometries and load cases are analysed. A mechanism is proposed for the brittle flaking of an ice wedge.
