Abstract: This paper investigates the interactions of kinked cracks in a single fault or multiple faults formed in brittle polycrystalline materials under biaxial compression. For this purpose, an approximate interaction model for unequal, unsymmetric kinked cracks of arbitrary locations and orientations is developed. The model is based on the dislocation modeling of the kinks and the approximate representation of crack tractions by orthogonal polyJIOmials. The dependence of the critical stress of crack extension on the friction coefficient, the kink length and the lateral confinement is investigated. The effects of two faults on the critical stress are also studied.
