Abstract: In cold regions, natural ice sheets adfreeze to piles, bridge piers, intake towers, etc. constructed in rivers, lakes and the sea. When the ice sheets adfreeze to these pile structures, vertical ice loads act on the structures due to changes in the water level. These vertical ice loads need to be studied to design pile structures affected by natural ice sheets. Vertical iCe loads acting on pile structures with circular cross-sections have been explained analytically. However, ice loads acting on pile structures with other cross-sections, such as pile structures with rectangular or elliptical cross-sections, have never been researched. In this report, we propose a technique for calculating the vertic. al ice loads acting on pile structures with elliptical cross-sections.
