Experimental Study of Ice Loads on Conical Structures

Abstract: In order to investigate the characteristics of ice loads acting on conical structures, tests for three scale models were carried out in columnar ice. The models were constructed of three parts, ice-breaking part, the ride-up part and the columnar part, to measure ice load components exerted on each part separately. For the largest model, ice-breaking part was separated into five parts in circumferential direction and load sensors were set up to measure the distribution of local icebreaking load. The compostion of ice load is discussed by comparing the measured ice load components with estimated ones by relevant prediction methods. The effects of model size on the ice load and broken ice pieces are also discussed. The presented study was carried out as a part of the project named "STUDY ON ICE LOAD ACTING ON MARINE STRUCTURES" sponsored by JOIA (Japan Ocean Industries Association), which is funded by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry of Japan.
