Abstract: On the upstream parts of the northern reservoirs, the ice clogging occurs during winter. This paper discusses the calculation of the ice-clogging pipe-flow. The relationship between the water temperature and the solid discharge is analysed. Under the same flow conditions, the lower temperature (0°C) flow can carry more sediment than the higber temperature flow by 5-28 times. This indicates that the low temperature can affect the flow structure and the sediment movement not only by the viscosity coefficient v, but also by the basic flow mechaniSms. If the flow velocity is larger than the sediment starting velocity, the sediment transporting and the bed scouring are not neglectable. According to the winter-sediment-transporting calculation for the Wanjiazhai reservoir on the Yellow River, there is no serious silting problems in the project.
