Resistance of Ice-Covered Nature Flows

Abstract: Hydraulic friction in free surface and ice-covered flows is considered. Dimensionless Darcy­-Weisbach coefficient is used to evaluate hydraulic resistance of flow. Analytical formula based on shear velocity and cross-sectional geometry of the flow is derived for the friction factor in river channels. Field data are used to validate the analysis. Applications of this approach to estimate of hydraulic resistance of nature flows is discussed.
