Abstract: The purpose of safe water conveyance in open channel can be achieved by means of ice covers during winter. The aim of this paper is to introduce the results of field observation in Jing-mi Diversion Canal by controlling flow conditions (Froude Number Fr 1.5 m) to form steady ice covers. Ice hazards occurred in rivers are caused by ice body submerging under ice covers or ice run blocking flow section. Based upon field observations, ice body will not dive into water under certain conditions. The ice body produced upstream will pile up at ice cover front to form steady ice covers. Meanwhile, the critical mean water temperature has been introduced at which ice run will not occur and ice covers will not decay during ice melting periods. low is subject to an increased resistance under ice covers. Measured data reveal that With the variations of ice thickness, the water depth and surface. gradient in a canal are adjusted, so as to derive a composite roughness coefficient (0.03) for an earthen canal under ice covers.
