Abstract: Before the establish of the People's Republic of China, ice flood was frequent at the the lower reaches of Yellow River, causing the riverbanks bursting and making much sufrering and loss. Since the new state was founded, many measures, such as ice breaking, ice obstructing, water bifurcating and water reserving, etc. have been adopted to avoid the bursting of the river banks. The effects are so outstanding that no outburst of the banks caused by ice floods has ever happened during the period of more than fourty years.
