Abstract: Since more than forty years, except for the routine ice observation items being observed at the upper Yellow River, there were also some special ice items to be observed and studied. The main results of the research included: the research of frazil ice, the mechanism of ice jam formation and its change laws as well as the research of calculation method of the water level of an ice jam, the formation process of ice-dam flood and its flood discharge and their analyzing and calculating. In the respect of ice prevention measures, according to the laws of ice floes movement, some type of flushing ice was adopted in the construction period of the projects. so as to faciliate the construction going through smoothly. After the large projects had been constructed at the upstream, the discharge control from the upstream reservoirs in the winters is an effective ice prevention measure for the downstream. In combination with the blasting, bombing and forecasting of ice, the damage caused by ice problem has largely dropped down, but, owing to the changing law of ice is very complex, the continuing observation and research for the ice problems are still a task to be studied in the later days.
