Abstract: It is well known that spring flood caused by melting river ice in the lower reaches of the Yellow River occurs unsteadily due to specific geographical position and complicated freeze changes. This article examines the regularities and characteristics of the cold waves that invaded in the lower reaches of the Yellow River based on more than fourty years observation data, and analyses the river's freeze by the influence of temperature, volume of the flow and conditions of the river banks. Then, a river freeze forecast method is made that based chiefly on the influence of cold waves in the lower reaches of the Yellow River. This method proved satisfactory in actual forecast inspectation.
