Abstract: In substantial part of the world rivers freeze-up in winter, thus causing important changes in flow conditions. Knowledge of the relation between discharge and water surface elevation in rivers or man-made channels is essential for engineering purposes. The formation of ice on open channels has a major influence on this relationship. In addition the flow has an important influence on the formation of ice cover as it governs the drag force and has a strong effect on the heat transfer to and from it. Good understanding of the effect of ice cover on the flow under it is very important.
