Abstract: Mainly the operation protections of the free surface water intakes are for ice and sediment phenomena, produced in the upstream vicinity of the trash racks. The two kinds of the protections have sometimes antagonistic effects and consequently is to be considered always the interdependence of them for a correct exploitation. By a physical and mathematical approach, using laboratory and numerical modelling, recommendations are made for the cold time operation, taking into consideration a specific case.
