Abstract: Arctic regions contain very large onshore and offshore sedimentary basins with various degrees of exploration maturity. In arctic Canada and Alaska, oil is produced and transported with tankers and by pipeline. In the Barents, Pechora and Kara Seas, Sakhalin and adjacent onshore arctic regions enormous hydrocarbon discoveries have been made, but not yet developed. This while exploration work in other parts of the offshore Russian arctic, Spitsbergen and offshore Greenland is still in a very early phase. The hostile climatic conditions In the arctic are the major reason why large onshore and offshore shelf and basin areas are not yet explored. Permafrost onshore and winter ice with drifting summer ice offshore make exploration work both difficult and expensive. This paper focuses on the special challenges of the arctic regions and the need for R&D to improve methods, procedures and equipment for arctic operations.
