Abstract: The present paper is devoted to the application of small deformation, flow theory of plasticity to model ductile behavior of columnar ice. Constitutive equations are described and, in particular, a 12-parameter yield criterion of elliptic type is addressed. Finite element analyses employing the flow theory in connection with the elliptic yield criterion are carried out for simulation of well-known triaxial confined-compression tests and of ice indentation.
