Abstract: In 1963 ENEL's hydroelectric production made up 67.5% of its energy output (46.2 TWh), while in 1992, on the wake of a considerable increase in Italy's national demand (244.4 TWh) and consequently. in the gross total energy yield (183.6 TWh), the hydroelectric production of ENEL S. p. A. alone had reached 33.1 TWh, roughly 18.0% of the entire production and 13.5% of the national demand. 24.3% of this yield was supplied by reserves stored in seasonally-regulated reservoirs of which the ones subtending nivoglacial basins make up about 82% of the entire energy reserve. The nivoglacial basins exploited by ENEL S. p. A. have a total extension of 3786 km2 with glacial cover over roughly 150 km2 which is equal to 8.6% of the total surface area.
