Abstract: This work discusses the duration of unaided navigation of the UL class ships, mainly due to ice conditions. The criteria for the estimation of the start and ending dates of a possible navigation without the ice breaking support, have been developed on the basis of a multiyear experience of shipping in the NSR zone (Busuyev, 1982). In particular, the beginning of unaided navigation is governed by the date, when one can choose the navigation route at the segment the Barents Sea - the Dikson port with ice concentration not more than 6/10 and also provided that the conditions of unaided navigation persist in a stable ice formation. Thus, one speaks here about a guaranteed period of the unaided navigation at the given segment of the NSR.
