Abstract: Full scale Kemi-I test cone measurement results were utilised in designing aids to navigation structures in the Gulf of Bothnia. The foundation pile, driven down to sea bottom, is furnished by a conical collar at the waterline to reduce sheet ice loads. Design was made for adfreeze, sheet ice, rafted ice and pressure ridge combinations. The total design load was reduced by about one third while using the cone to break sheet and rafted ice. Three leading light structures were completed in August 1993 to the new Oulu fairway. One of them has mechanical horizontal ice load measuring system. Measurement results from the winter 1993/1994 indicate predicted performance of the conical section.
