Abstract: Physical picture of ice-breaker motion in smooth ice with thickness of h is under consideration. Ice-breaker destructs ice cover while moving in ice. This destruction takes place because of efforts applied by ice-breaker hull in the site of contact with ice cover edge. Interaction with ice edge can take place in different parts along fore sharpening in the site of functioning waterline. The main principle of breaking is the destruction of ice plate because of its bend. Ice-breaker hull form capable of making considerable vertical components of efforts in the site of contact with ice contributes to it.
