Abstract: Oil and gas production in the Arctic represent great engineering challenges because of the remote location, the cold climate, seasonal ice infested waters and a particularly sensitive environment to oil pollution. The Operator Committee North (OKN) has over a 5 year period studied sea ice and icebergs in the Barents Sea. The study showed that first year ice are the main component. Multiyear ice are ready found. The glaciers at Franz Josef Land seem to be the main source for icebergs in the Barents Sea.
