Abstract: This paper focuses on the broken ice fields in the ocean. It presents first the types and the surface coverage of such fields on earth, followed by research topics that have been pursued in the past two decades concerning broken ice fields. In the Conclusion, implications of the processes that take place in the broken ice fields are discussed. Studies in the broken ice fields are interdisciplinary. Many new areas are to be explored and new understanding is to be obtained.
