Abstract: Laboratory studies demonstrate a mechanism by which sediment entrained in coastal waters can be deposited in a surface ice layer as a result of wave action. This process is simulated in the laboratory with a column of sediment-laden water oscillating through a stationary ice cover. The sediment enrichment process is found to depend upon the sediment size and concentration in the underlying water column, period and duration of the wave action, and size of the surface ice particles.
