Abstract: The modelling of the ice/water boundary layer is discussed on the basis of some different approaches applied to rivers, lakes and oceans. The fluxes of momentum, heat and mass in the water control the evolution of the ice cover and are of main interest for many applications. Three different methods for calculating the fluxes are outlined. They are: calculation based upon bulk formulas, coupled ice/water models using wall functions and coupled ice/water models, which resolve the viscous sub-layers. Also the problem of modelling fluxes when large roughness elements are present (due to ice jams or keels) are discussed.
