Abstract: In this paper we summarize the effects of small dams on the basic processes of ice formation and breakup in rivers. A discussion is made on the modifications of the thermal regime, frazil and slush formation leading to the localization of hanging dams at the upstream end of the backwaters formed be a dam. At breakup, a dam also retains the ice and form a jam in its backwaters, which often melts in place, and thus protect at least partially the lower reach from ice jamming. The effects of a dam on the time of freeze-up and breakup is also discussed.
