Abstract: In order to preventing structures from damage due to ice pressure, an ice breaking technique of using the ice melting device with jetted steam is presented in this paper. An ice melting device adapted to the technical conditions of ice breaking work was designed and applied. This device is equipped with boiler to produce dry saturated steam, which runs through the jet nozzel to jet and melt ice body. This paper introduces the principle of the technique, the structural feature of the device, the technical characteristics and its merit. The comparision of this technique with other, conventional ice breaking methods is also made in this paper. This technique can also be applied to investigation of lice in situ and breaking ice under water, picking ice blocks, dispelling ice frost over structures and modelling arts of ice. The advantages of this technique are simple in structure, convenient for application, easy operating, labour and time saving, high efficiency, no destruction to the structures and safety in operation.
