Model Test Investigation of Local Ice Pressure Distribution at Cylindrical Structures

Abstract: As part of a comprehensive model test program to investigate ice forces on a fixed multilegged offshore structure, special tests at relatively large scales (Lambda= 7 resp. 14) were carried out at HSVA’s ice model basin on three cylindrical structural members. Each of the three models were subjected to horizontal sheet ice with intercalated pressure ridges. The objective of the test program was to determine the total horizontal ice force as well as the local ice pressure distribution around the perimeter of the cylindrical structures. The front part of the cylinders was cut into seven equally sized vertical segments, each of which was instrumented with two load cells to measure the horizontal ice force acting perpendicular to the vertical middle axis of the curved segments. The test results clearly showed the local ice pressure to strongly increase with decreasing area of ice force application. The distributions of the ice forces/pressures were compared with the cosine distribution: significant differences were found between the momentary and the mean peak ice pressure distributions respectively. Similar results were found at full scale measurements of HSVA by means of ice force panels at offshore structures in China and Sweden.
