Abstract: Experiments have established that pre-strain under conditions where ice is ductile raises the strain rate at which the material undergoes the ductile-to-brittle transition under compression. For instance, .. . for columnar saline ice at -10°C compressed along the columns is increased from one to two orders of magnitude (i. e., 3 x 10-5 --> 10-4s-1 to 10-3 -->3 x 10-3s-1) upon prestraining -0.035 at 10-5 s-1. When prestrained the same amount by compressing in a direction normal to the column, .. . is increased by about one order of magnitude. Correspondingly, the strength is generally reduced. These effects are attributed to changes within the internal structure of the ice caused by the prestrain.
