Abstract: 1) The adfreeze bond strength of heavy-duty coated steel pipe piles is clarified and can be lower than that of uncoated steel pipe piles and concrete piles. 2) The adfreeze bond strength of heavy-duty coated steel pipe piles increases with decreasing ice temperature and this relationship can be approximated by a straight line. 3) When the mean wave height of surface irregularities is less than 10 mm as is the case with heavy-duty coated steel pipe piles of very smooth surface finish, the adfreeze bond strength is apparently little affected by the mean wave height of surface irregularities but strongly affected by the properties of coating materials (such as cohesive energy, and hardness). 4) Since steel pipe piles coated with polymers like polyethylene and urethane are lower in adfreeze bond strength than concrete piles or painted steel pipe piles, they are thought to be suitable for use in arctic seas and frozen rivers and lakes.
