Abstract: Snow removal and ice control are the most important techniques in the road maintenance in northern countries. This paper gives a new and comprehensive classification of various snow and ice appearing on roads in special references to their structure and physical properties. In the classification snow and ice on roads were classified into seven types: new-snow, compacted-snow, powder-snow, grain-snow, slush, ice-crust, and ice-film. Each of the five types except the two, that is powder-snow and slush, was divided into two subtypes, that is dry and wet. In addition the dry compacted-snow was subdivided into soft and hard ones.
