Abstract: Scientific and operational support has become an integral element of organization of ice navigation on the sea waterways. On the inland waterways the existing hydrometeorological support is provided by the hydrometeorological service and is confined to informational aspects. However, the experience of operating river ships in ice conditions calls for a need to create scientific and operational support which would include, in addition to trustworthy hydrometeorological information, operational recommendations on technical and technological matters. In 198? -1988 the Gorky Institute of Water Transport Engineers jointly with specialists of the Volga United River Company, Volgo tanker Shipping Company and Ob-Irtysh Shipping Conrpany carried out experimental work on scientific and operational support of early-spring navigation. This paper summarizes the results of the experiments.
