Abstract: The paper deals with the simulation model to be used in substantiation of optimum navigation season length in various shipping directions along the Northern Sea Route (NSR). Depending on the range and volumes of the freight to be transported, as well as length of the navigation season, the required capacity and number of ships and icebreakers are determined. The simulation model makes it possible to evaluate the quality of the given transport system by means of interrelated modeling of ports, unguided shipping and icebreaker escorting. The speeds of ships and convoys, as well as the sectors for icebreaker escorting are calculated according to the technical characteristics of the fleet and meteorological and ice conditions, set for each month in conformity with the existing statistical data. The adaptive algorithms used in the model optimize the transport system's functioning with respect to the specific situation. The use of the model helps to shape the main operation and economic characteristics that make it possible to assess the quality of Interaction between the transport system's various elements and the selected vessels.
