Abstract: The present work is concerned with the numerical modeling and analysis of pack ice interaction with ships by using the distinct element method which can provide accurate and reliable simulation to the problem in hand. An in-house computer program (DEM2D) was enhanced during the course of the present work to include environmental driving forces, and generation of pack ice field. The enhanced version of DEM2D was then used to carry out a numerical and parametric study to investigate the effect of different factors upon the expected level of pack ice forces on ships under different field conditions.
