River-Flow Regulation for Controlled Ice-Cover Formation

Abstract: Excessive production of frazil ice in rivers may lead to the occurence of ice jams, and attendant flooding, during winter. Regulation of river flow in order to facilitate rapid ice-cover formation is a promising approach to minimize frazil-ice generation. A numerical model was developed to simulate ice-cover formation by frazil-ice accumulation over stage-regulated navigation pools. The results of the model indicate that there exists an optimum river discharge for a given size of the navigation pool, that corresponds to a minimum time required for the ice cover to form. Time to form an ice cover decreases with decrease in air temperature.
