Abstract: The paper is based on data observed at Hequ Reach of the Yellow River during 6 freezing periods. The paper briefly deals with the particularities of formation and evolution of ice jams in the Hequ reach. Analysis has been made on the law of variation of river stage in the aforesaid section in freezing period, and expression has been established on the law of variation of river stage at the beginning of freeze-up and when the river is steadily frozen.
