Abstract: In rivers with higher water velocity where frazil is produced, the first ice cover is formed in spots with lower water velocity by halting the ice floes motion and forming the ice bridge. Behind the ice bridge the flowing frazil slush is accumulated and the ice cover is rapidly spread upstream. The ice bridge formation results in accumulating the ice, which brings about damage and operation difficulties, this necessitates revealing causes and conditions of the ice bridge formation. The hypothesis presented is derived both from the results of measurements and observation on rivers, and from the theoretical analysis of the entiere process, the hypothesis includes the mathematical description of forces affecting the ice field in the channel and determines the condition of the ice bridge formation. This condition is verified by the results of measurements and observation on the Elbe river. The ice bridge formation is not dependent only on the water velocity, but also on the water surface width, the water depth, meteorological conditions, the distance of the frazil slush transport, etc. The hypothesis elucidates why in some river reaches the ice bridge is formed already at high water velocities, while in others only at comparatively extremely low ones.
