Abstract: Ice sheet failure against an inclined faced structure takes place dominantly in the bending mode but also buckling or local crushing and shearing failures are present as well. A refined theoretical model is developed to observe the effect of ice rubble pile on the bending moment distribution in the ice sheet in front of the structure. Different ice failure modes are considered and methods for calculating resulting ice forces are described. The application of fracture mechanics approach for determining failure loads is presented. Sample calculations indicate the effect of rubble pile on failure conditions. Bending failure is dominant but with thick ice shearing failure becomes also likely. Ice shearing failure against an inclined-faced structure always results in significantly lower ice forces than crushing failure.
