Abstract: The paper considers the research of the penetration of a hard ball with a mass M and an initial velocity V into a floating ice plate. The system of equations describing the process of penetration consists of the equation of flexure of a thin elastic ice plate on elastic foundation, the equation of motion of a hard body and the equation of the dependence of the contact pressure force on the depth of the ball penetration into ice. Analytical solution of the problem and dependence of the contact force, the value of the ice plate deflection, the depth of penetration on time have been obtained. The dependence of the size of a ball hollow on the initial energy of a ball and physical and mechanical properties of ice have been also investigated. So the process of penetration of a hard ball into a floating ice plate has been completely described in the paper. The solution obtained is the base for experimental determination of the sea ice strength necessary for engineering analysis. Nomogrammes presented in the paper give the possibility to determine the ball's hardness from the final size of a ball hollow.
