Abstract: Since the construction of the Yangeoxia reservoir (1961) and before the completion of the Luijiaxia reservoir (1967), there has been severe annual of the water behind ice jams from 1961 to 1967. Due to the ice jams, the high water stages were nine meters higher than the mean winter water level and almost approached the flood level with the frequency of 1/1000, the maximum thickness of the piled-up sludge was more than ten meters in height. Consequently the main road and foundation pit at Liujiaxia were flooded and the working office and the living areas were threatened by flood. The paper discusses the changing laws of the formation of the ice jams and the method for calculating the backwater curve of the ice jams based on data observed from 1962 to 1966.
