Abstract: This paper presents a two-dimensional theoretical method for calculating the level ice resistance for ships that have a landing-craft bow form, such as the Thyssen-Waas Bow. The approach combines the use of: (1) the plastic limit analysis method for describing the ice failure mechanism and the associated ice velocity field; and (2) the linear and angular momentum method for determining the average ice resistance for a ship. The results compare reasonably well with published model test data for the Thyssen-Waas icebreakers. Comparisons with predictions based on another numerical method are also provided.
