Abstract: A new method for measuring the ice-breaking component simultaneously with the total level ice resistance using a segmented model is described in the paper. A model test series is conducted with a model of a fairway vessel and the obtained ice resistance values are compared with the full-scale resistance values measured for the same ship in the Gulf of Finland. The flexural strength and elastic modulus of the level ice are measured both in the model and in the full scale with in situ four-point-bending apparatus. This test method is shortly described and the main results are also presented in the paper.
