The Critical Strain Energy as a Failure and Crack Propagation Criterion for Ice

Abstract: In this paper, we will present first a review of the available failure criteria in the literature for both isotropic and anisotropic materials. The review shows that failure criteria for anisotropic materials can be generally with or without distinct failure modes. Secondly, the variable critical energy release rate is suggested as a failure and crack propagation criterion for ice. The criterion is applicable over wide range of rates of loading in which ice will respond as a brittle or visco-elastlc material. The criterion leads to a rate dependent critical strain energy curve which can be used to predict the final failure of ice under wide range of rates of loading. Finally, an attempt is made to theoretically predict some of the available experimental ice strength data using the suggested failure criterion.
