Abstract: Floods during ice run on the lower reaches of the Yellow River have long been known as cause of frequent dyke breaches, bringing about disastrous consequences. During the past 30 years, there occurred many a time serious menaces of floods during ice run, the study of their genesis and adoption of measures of protection are therefore of much significance. The lower course of the Yellow River possesses its particularities with respect to the evolution of ice run besides the features common to all rivers in cold climate. The paper treats, in detail and in a comprehensive way, the causes for the formation of flood during ice run, from the angle of geography, meteorology, hydrology, river morphology as well as the nature of the "suspended river", as it is sometimes called.
