Abstract: Three reports have been presented by this Working Group. The first was published in the Proceedings of the 3rd International Symposium on Ice Problems (1975) and focused on methods of carrying out uniaxial tension and compression tests. The second was published following the 4th International Symposium on Ice Problems (Schwarz, ed., 1979) and concentrated on flexural testing with in situ cantilever beams, strain measurements in ice, an update on compression testing, and some initial thoughts on brine drainage and friction measurements. The two reports have been integrated in a journal paper (Schwarz, et al., 1981). The third report was published in the proceedings of the 5th International Symposium on Ice Problems (1981) and concentrated on multiaxial testing, friction measurements, and the influence of air content and machine stiffness on strength. The Working Group met at Helsinki in 1983 in connection with POAC and in 1984 at the IAHR Ice Symposium. The present report offers new recommendations on measurements of elasticity, stress and strain, and fracture toughness.
