Abstract: A talk on glacier mechanics at an ice engineering symposium seems to deserve a word of explanation, especially when it is given by somebody with dubious credentials and no discernible motivation. The fact is that the IAHR, which takes care of international collaboration in ice engineering, has in recent years developed close contacts with the International Commission on Snow and Ice, or ICSI, which take care of international collaboration in glaciology generally. The two organizations have been joint sponsors for a number of meetings, and as a co-sponsor of this symposium, ICSI was asked by IAHR to arrange a talk on glacier mechanics. There were no takers among the real glaciologists, and so the Secretary of ICSI wound up with the job. Being in no way qualified to give an authoritative review of glacier mechanics, I shall try to outline what the subject is about, and how it might relate to the mainstream of ice engineering.
