Abstract: The paper deals with temperature fluctuations of ice sheets associated with changes in air temperature, main factors affecting ice pressure and variation of pressure due to expansion of ice. Data obtained at five reservoirs were analyzed. The maximum thrust of ice sheet occurs in the season when ice is thickest, after successive days of temperature rise, and with mean initial ice temperature at about -5 to -6C. With initial temperature still lower, the pressure is smaller. It takes 30 hr to develop the maximum pressure with sustained rise in temperature. After the mean ice temperature has reached -1.5 to 2.0°C or so, further rises in temperature do not bring about pressure increase. A formula has been derived for computing ice pressure directly from data on air temperature. The computed and observed values agree in the main.
