Abstract: A torsion creep test was conducted on randomly oriented snow ice to analyze primary creep. Primary creep includes a recoverable delayed elastic strain and an unrecoverable strain which also decreases with time. A new apparatus for testing ice in various conditions of strain rate and stresses is described. lt has been designed for deforming ice samples in compression in two perpendicular directions. Experimental tests can be performed for constant strain rates, constant stresses or following a deformation path.
