Abstract: The current basis for design of ice bridges and ice platforms is considered. Experience and performance observations showing that the moving load problem can be treated analytically using the theory of thin elastic plates on an elastic foundation are summarized, and an opinion is expressed as to the information still required. The basis for the design of ice platforms, for which a validated analytical method has not yet been established, is reviewed; and the possibility of progress on the problem, provided by the capability for measuring strains in ice covers, is pointed out.
