Heat Transfer During Freezing in Calm Water

Abstract: Water was allowed to cool in a stainless steel tank of diameter 120 cm and depth 76 cm, insulated at sides and bottom, in a cold room maintained at constant temperatures T of -2°C, -5°C, -10°C, -20°C. The net heat flux Q was calculated from the rate of change of water temperature before ice formation and at several ice thicknesses, and was found to fit an equation of the form log (Q/ T) = b-ah. Values we obtained for a coefficient relating ice thickness to the number of degree-days of frost.
