Thermal Discharges in Winter Conditions Interaction with the Ice Cover

Abstract: Numerical models of thermal discharges have been established for the case of surface discharges and submerged discharges, taking into account the particularities of winter conditions in cold climates. The model of surface discharge is a modified form of the numerical model developed at the M. I. T. by Stolzenback and Harleman. The present model considers the non-linear relationship between density and temperature, for temperatures near the freezing point and also the particular heat transfer that occurs at a free surface uncovered by ice during winter. Density differences in the equations of motions are then expressed in terms of temperature. The equations are integrated analytically over the cross-section giving rise to additional terms. The numerical computation is limited to the one-dimensional progression along the jet axis and the computer time required is practically unchanged. The boundary condition at the free surface is also modified in order to consider the total heat transfer instead of the excess heat transfer as it is usually done for summer conditions.
