Abstract: After the completion of the reservoir on the Danube River downstream from Bratislava, the course of the winter regime on the stream change essentially and the probability of ice jams occurring in the Bratislava region would increase. Ice jams near Bratislava do not jeopardize the town in the frosty period, though a serious flood may be caused even by an insignificant increase of the Danube discharge during the thawing period. The study performed on a tiltable flume and on the hydraulic model of the reservoir showed the conditions favorable for ice jams occurrence and the ways how to relieve the river profile. It is recommended to train the river bed downstream from Bratislava, to loosen a slot in the reservoir ice cover using icebreakers, and to withdraw the ice mass from the city area into the reservoir. The necessary increase of surface velocities in the broken channel are obtained by lowering the water level elevation and by stream concentration by means of guiding embankment in the reservoir. The skimmed ice should be deposited in the left the old river channel downstream from the weir.
