Abstract: The paper presents the peculiarities of ice jam formation in afterbays depending on the regime of hydrological power plant flushes and heat exchange of water surface in the period of ice edge move. lt is noted that ice edge destruction and ice jam formation happen in the area within which the range of water level fluctuations during flushes exceeds 3-4 times the ice edge thickness.
